Songs in A&E was mostly written before the flatline: Jason Pierce nearly died in 2005 from pneumonia and periorbital cellulitis, and he later said the songs seemed to see it coming. Spiritualized's sixth album takes its title from the UK's Accident & Emergency wards where he was treated, and across eighteen tracks, six of them brief instrumental "Harmony" interludes, it swings between gospel, garage rock, and orchestral art-pop.
