Blue Train LP

Coltrane made just one album as a leader for Blue Note, and the label paid the band to rehearse first, unusual money for 1957. Recorded in a single September session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, it carries four Coltrane originals pointing toward Giant Steps. Gold certification didn't arrive until 2001, decades later, which says something about how patiently jazz gets rewarded.
