Wayne Shorter walked into the studio on December 24, 1964, with Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones, and some of these tunes took more than twenty takes to beat into shape, like he was wrestling something that didn't want to sit still. He was fresh off five years with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and already playing in Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, writing at the peak of his powers. This is one of the defining records of Blue Note's mid-1960s post-bop run, cut in a single session.
