Moussolou LP

Oumou Sangaré cut this at 18 in Abidjan, and it's said to have moved more than 250,000 cassette copies back in Mali, which for 1990 is basically going triple platinum with zero marketing budget behind it. Six songs, arranged by Amadou Ba Guindo, built on the Wassoulou style out of southern Mali: her voice set against kamalé ngoni, karignan percussion, guitar, bass, and violin. The lyrics took on forced marriage and women's rights and caused a real stir, enough to help make her one of Africa's great feminist voices in music.
