King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard self-recorded their debut in 2012 with Paul Maybury, but the title track got a stranger treatment: four iPhones propped around a room, Stu Mackenzie singing into one of them. That lo-fi garage-punk and acid-rock scramble somehow won Best Independent Hard Rock, Heavy or Punk Album at the AIR Awards, earning the band an actual grant, and a 2018 vinyl reissue pushed it to #14 on the ARIA albums chart, proof a record built partly on phone mics can still out-chart records that weren't.
