Running with Scissors is Cavetown's sixth album and the one where he picked a fight with his own reputation, trading the stripped-down bedroom pop for a first release on Futures Music Group pushed hard into pop-punk and hyperpop. Robin Skinner writes about adolescence, anxiety, masculinity, and being a trans man on tracks like 'Cryptid,' 'NPC,' and 'Tarmac,' and the gamble mostly paid off: Clash picked out 'Cryptid' for praise and Dork called the record bursting with ideas. Funny how walking away from the sound that made him famous turned into the better review cycle.
