Sunday at the Village Vanguard LP

June 25, 1961, Village Vanguard: Bill Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, Paul Motian on drums, three guys talking to each other like nobody's supposed to overhear. Less than two weeks later LaFaro was dead, a car wreck, so this is the last time that trio ever played. Riverside rushed it out within months and put LaFaro's name right on the cover. Every edition of the Penguin Guide to Jazz has handed it a crown since 1992.
