FAQ's

1.1 Does your website have the same inventory as your stores?

No. While we try our best to put all of our titles online, our website only reflects a small portion of what we have at our Denver - Capitol Hill location, and is not inclusive of our other locations' inventory (Northside, Broadway Bazaar, and Stanley Marketplace). In other words, if our Northside store has a title in stock but our Cap Hill location does not, the website will show that item as unavailable. If you want to check all stores to see if we have an item, you can call any of our stores and ask to see if we have something at any of our stores. If we have it at our Capitol Hill location, you can also ask our staff to put it online so you can buy it from afar.

If you’ve never visited us in person before, come on by when you’re in the neighborhood.

1.2 Can you put something on hold for me? I promise I'll be in ASAP to buy it!

Nope, sorry. The problem with holding items is that until they are sold they still appear online on our website. So if someone buys it online, we end up having to disappoint either the person who put it on hold or the person online. For this reason we never allow holds on any new items.

The good news is you can place an order on our website, and select "In-Store Pickup" as a delivery option. We'll send you an email when it's ready!

1.3 I placed an order online for in-store pickup. Can I choose my pickup location?

At this time, pickups can only be made at our Denver - Capitol Hill location:

638 E 13th Ave, Denver, CO 80203

1.4 Can I change my online order to ship to me instead of in-store pickup?

Yes! Just use this link to purchase shipping for your order, and email [email protected] to let us know to look for your separate payment for shipping (please remember to reference your original order number).

1.5 Do you sell rare and collectible items?

We sure do! Check out any of our locations, we put the rarest stuff on the wall. You can also check us out on Discogs! Most of our rare items are sold in-store, and our Discogs items do not appear in store.

1.6 Can I place a special order?

We are always taking suggestions for what we should stock in the store. Ask any of our employees to “put in a customer request” and they have a way to place a potential order. If it is something that is both currently available and something we can typically sell (somewhat popular), we’ll order it and it’ll appear in the store’s regular stock within a couple of weeks. We don’t, however, currently have a system for ordering things for specific people and notifying them. We’re working on that.

2 Selling
2.1 Will you buy my used vinyl?

Yes! Wax Trax is well known for paying fair prices for used vinyl, CDs, cassettes, 8-tracks, and even reel to reels. We do not buy 78s, VHS, or DVDs.

We are interested in a wide variety of musical genres (some more than others based on what people are buying these days) and we have the ability to purchase both small or very large collections. Because we base our cash offers on criteria of condition, pressing, and what we already have in stock, we often need time to assess collections overnight. Typically we do not buy classical or big band, but we do take donations.

You can drop your collection by the store anytime during our normal hours, and we'll generally call you back within 24-48 hours with an offer. Lists of what you have are not necessary, but letting us know the flavor of what you have will help us determine if it's worth bringing them our way.

We will also make house calls for collections with good sellable titles exceeding 500 LPs, and we’re prepared and excited to buy massive collections.

- Vinyl - We buy LPs, 12", 7"/45s, 10", certain box sets and any format except 78s. Items must be in very good or better condition with their covers.
- Cassettes - We buy cassettes, including blank ones that are still sealed!
- CDs - We still buy CDs, but most do not command a high price and we only buy CDs that are pristine (without any scratches or other signs of wear). Some CDs are rare and we do offer fair prices for those.
- 8-Tracks - Yep, we will even buy 8-tracks but we are picky on which titles we'll invest in.
- Reel to Reels - Yep, but we buy only the best titles in this format.

If you have further questions about selling vinyl or other used items to us, feel free to email us at [email protected].

2.2 Will you buy my used stereo equipment?

Wax Trax buys quality stereo equipment at fair prices. After we buy it, we put everything we buy through a cleaning and repair process so we can then guarantee its operation to the new owner. This does mean we have to invest an additional ~$80 in every item we buy, and that means we can’t pay a lot for some entry-level turntables and receivers. But you can feel good about sending these items to a happy home. Higher end items command better prices.

- Turntables - If it is a quality model (we don't buy Victrola or Crossleys), bring it by and we'll include it in our offer. A good rule of thumb is: if it has an adjustable counter-weight at the back end of the tone arm, we are likely to be interested.
- Receivers, Speakers, CD Players - Yes we also buy high quality stereo equipment.
- Cassette Decks - Only the most high-end cassette decks are cost effective to repair, so we do buy these, but we don’t buy entry-level cassette decks.
- All in one stereo systems - If your system has a cassette or CD along with a turntable and a radio all in the same unit, we do not buy these.

2.3 I'm a local musician. Can you sell my albums in your shop?

Yes. We sell music from Colorado artists on consignment. We typically start with one copy per format, and if it sells well, our local team will gradually increase quantities and expand the offering to our other shop locations. All local releases are also listed in our online store. We find that vinyl and cassettes sell much better than CDs.

3 Vinyl Troubleshooting
3.1 Why is my new record skipping all over the place?

When a brand-new record is skipping all over the place, it is almost always caused by the turntable, not the vinyl itself. A big clue is what kind of music it is. Many 1990s and newer records are made from recordings with higher recording levels, especially in the bass, because recording levels increased after CDs became the dominant format. Entry-level turntables (including models from Crosley, Victrola, and even some intro models from Audio-Technica, Sony and others) often can’t track these louder bass passages and may skip repeatedly. A pressing defect (like a foreign object on the platter or a divot) will skip in the same spot every time. Tonearm issues usually cause skipping across basslines throughout the record.

There are two common turntable-related causes:

- Not enough tracking weight. Many tonearms are set up for older, quieter pressings. If your turntable has an adjustable counterweight, rebalancing it using the owner’s manual can help. If it’s not adjustable, carefully affixing a small coin (penny, nickel, or dime) to the top of the headshell with scotch tape can increase tracking weight. But we would recommend upgrading your turntable.

- Ceramic cartridges. Cheaper turntables often use rigid ceramic cartridges, which have little give and are more likely to jump during loud or bass-heavy sections compared to moving magnet cartridges.

In some cases, the best solution is a turntable upgrade. We’re always happy to play the record on our in-store turntables so you can hear the difference.

4 Events
4.1 Do your in-store events cost money or need a reservation?

No! Our events are always free and open to the public. Sometimes they do get too crowded to get everyone in the door though, so it makes sense to arrive early.

4.2 How does my band get an event at Wax Trax?

If your band is doing great in the city and drawing in crowds or if you’re touring nationally and want to stop through to engage with fans we want to support your rise. Let us know what you have in mind by emailing us at [email protected]. When both the band and the store market a great event, we do get good crowds.

4.3 Can I spin vinyl at Wax Trax?

Wax Trax has monthly events that bring in the best DJs from across the city. We also love to feature DJs from other parts of the nation and the world. If you’re a master of the turntables, pitch us on your ideas about appearing at Wax Trax at [email protected].
