Volume 13 breaks from strict oldies excavation. Alongside Thee Midniters' Sad Girl sits new East LA material from Tierra, Pepe Marquez, Myke Nez and Dayna Donna, none of it vintage. The gambit works because the newer cuts do not chase the old records' sound, they extend the same East LA soul lineage from the inside. A reissue series finally writes some of its own chapters.
