"Intoxicated Man" collects Serge Gainsbourg's earliest recordings, from his 1958 debut "Du Chant à la Une!" through the early 1960s, well before he turned into French pop's great provocateur. Backed by small jazz combos, this is Gainsbourg still working out his persona, home to "Le Poinçonneur des Lilas," his first single about a bored Paris metro ticket-puncher, and "La Chanson de Prévert." It's a sharper, more understated version of him than the yé-yé and concept records that came after.
