Robin Katz spent part of his childhood around flamenco guitar in southern Spain before working his way through Hendrix and into the jazz vocabulary of Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt, and Hypnos is where all three strands finally sit in the same room. The record for Gearbox Records is built on his nylon-string guitar against Nathaniel Ledwidge's Hammond organ, keeping things spare enough that the bossa nova and soul touches barely announce themselves. Katz produced it himself with FREEMONK, who also recorded and mixed the whole thing at The Friary Studios, which tracks for a record this unwilling to raise its voice.
