Kenny Burrell cut Midnight Blue in one session on April 21, 1963, for Blue Note, with Stanley Turrentine on tenor, Major Holley on bass, Bill English on drums and Ray Barretto working the congas like a low, steady engine underneath it all. The opener, “Chitlins Con Carne,” turned into one of the most covered tunes in the Blue Note catalog. Burrell already had a name as one of jazz's most in-demand session guitarists, and this remains one of his most celebrated dates as a leader, built on a groove that never hurries.
