Joy Oladokun grew up in Casa Grande, Arizona, the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, and picked up guitar on her own after watching a Tracy Chapman video at ten. Her records, including In Defense of My Own Happiness and Proof of Life, push folk, alt-country, and R&B against each other until something plainspoken comes out the other side. Hope Is a Heavy Thing keeps that pressure on, pairing her with Nigerian artist Adekunle Gold on "Sage" and drawing from collaborators like Chris Stapleton, Noah Kahan, and Manchester Orchestra.
