John Boorman's 1977 Exorcist II: The Heretic got torn apart on release and still sits among the franchise's weaker entries, but Ennio Morricone's score survived the wreckage. Better known for his Sergio Leone westerns, Morricone skipped the usual horror-score tricks for dissonant choirs and orchestral textures built around recurring cues like "Pazuzu" and "Regan's Theme." Even the critics who hated the movie admitted the composer had built something stranger and smarter than the film deserved.
