Dr. John's voo-doo masterwork of New Orleans Blues, thick churning swamp rhythms and a whole three-ring circus of wild, inventive instrumentation make Gris-Gris, released in 1968, a remarkable debut album. Though it wasn't much thought of initially (head record exec Ahmet Ertegun lamented, 'How can we market this boogaloo crap'!) four decades later it regularly shows up Best of... lists from Rolling Stone to The Wire.
