Prince Paul cut Johnny Cash against Hall & Oates against Steely Dan and the Turtles, then ran the splice through a Casio RZ-1 and an Eventide Harmonizer until it snapped into something new. 3 Feet High and Rising topped Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart, went platinum, the only De La Soul album to do it, and later entered the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. Robert Christgau called it "radically unlike any rap you or anybody else has ever heard," a verdict that's held up for decades.
