Buarque, Chico - (self-titled) LP

Chico Buarque's self-titled 1978 album, often called Samambaia, was cut for Phonogram/Philips under Brazil's military dictatorship, which actively hunted his lyrics for censorship. The key track, "Cálice," co-written with Gilberto Gil and sung with Milton Nascimento, turns on a pun: it sounds like "cale-se," or "shut up." Censors banned the song outright in 1973; it only reached release here in 1978 once the political climate loosened. Eleven tracks deep, the record went gold and holds up as one of Buarque's best. Buy it for "Cálice" alone; everything else here just proves the point.
