Denvoid and the Cowtown Punks: A Collection of Stories From the ’80s Denver Punk Scene is a unique oral and visual history of one of America's most overlooked underground music scenes.

Through in-depth interviews with musicians, artists, promoters, culture jammers, reformed skinheads, business owners, and other participants, Bob Rob Medina captures the people and personalities who shaped Denver's punk and underground culture from roughly 1982–1987.

The expanded Second Edition includes 28 additional pages of photographs, flyers, and other artifacts from the era.

But Denvoid isn't simply another punk-rock history. Medina looks beyond the familiar stories of three-chord songs, leather jackets, and rebellion to explore the strange, creative, sometimes violent, and often contradictory world that developed in Denver. Punk, hardcore, experimental music, visual art, zines, and DIY culture collided in a city geographically isolated from the era's larger cultural centers.

The book features more than 100 of Medina's vivid, hand-colored illustrations, alongside photographs, flyers, record covers, and other artifacts. Together, they create a visual record of a scene that developed largely on its own terms—and whose influence eventually reached far beyond Denver.

A HISTORY WRITTEN FROM THE INSIDE
Medina wasn't an outsider looking back at the Denver scene. He was part of it.

A Colorado native, he played in numerous bands, produced fanzines, promoted shows, and founded Donut Crew Records, a label that documented many of Denver's underground bands.

To help shape the book's extensive interviews and research, Medina worked with author and college instructor David Ensminger, author of several punk-related books including Visual Vitriol: The Street Art and Subcultures of the Punk and Hardcore Generation, and Left of the Dial: Conversations with Punk Icons.

Sonny Kay, a former Colorado resident, founder of GSL Records, member of The VSS and Angel Hair, and longtime artist and designer, designed the book.

WHAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID
“It's fucking amazing. Bob Rob conducted tons of interviews with people from the Denver punk scene of the '80s, then added lots of his own incredible artwork, which makes the whole thing super vivid and eye-popping...It's such a labor of love; passion practically drips off the page...It's an unvarnished, unflinching look at a time that was as violent and intolerant as it was creative and liberating.” — Jason Heller

"A huge, weighty, colorful, stinky, profusely illustrated, sparsely photographed book about the Denver scene of the 1980s—a scene that, due to relative geographic isolation and the absence of internet, mutated largely along its own trajectory."
— Razorcake
