Yazoo pulled these 14 sides from Big Bill Broonzy's earliest 78s, cut years before the voice everyone associates with him fully arrived. The guitar work is already there, intricate ragtime and country-blues picking under vocals that are warmer and less hurried than what came later. Call it Broonzy before he became Broonzy, a formative stretch that still shaped what prewar acoustic blues would sound like for decades.
