Antonio Carlos Jobim booked Van Gelder Studio in 1967, handed the arrangements to Claus Ogerman, and let Creed Taylor stack the session with heavyweights: Ron Carter on bass, Urbie Green and Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Jerome Richardson on flute. A&M/CTI put it out and it climbed to No. 5 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart. The title cut and 'Triste' turned into standards almost immediately, and Jobim never fused bossa nova melody and orchestral string writing more completely than he does here.
