About Tame Impala
Tame Impala is the recording project of Australian musician Kevin Parker, born in Sydney on January 20, 1986 and raised in Perth, Western Australia. Parker writes, performs, records, mixes, and produces all Tame Impala material himself in his Fremantle, Western Australia home studio - unprecedented one-man-band approach for a mainstream contemporary rock band. They are widely cited as one of the most important contemporary psychedelic rock acts. Their 2010 debut Innerspeaker established their foundational sound and international audience. Their 2012 follow-up Lonerism expanded their commercial trajectory. Their 2015 album Currents - pivoting toward more synthesizer and electronic production approaches - marked their commercial breakthrough, reaching #4 on the Billboard 200 and launching the international singles The Less I Know the Better and Let It Happen. The band's international audience expanded through the late-2010s and 2020s, with Parker collaboration with Rihanna, Travis Scott, Lady Gaga, Theophilus London, Kali Uchis, and many other international pop and hip hop figures. Their 2020 follow-up The Slow Rush continued their commercial dominance and reached #3 on the Billboard 200. Their foundational influence on contemporary psychedelic rock is widely cited.
Sound and style
Tame Impala's sound combines psychedelic rock, neo-psychedelia, psychedelic pop, synth-pop, indie rock, dance-pop, alternative rock, and electronic with Parker's distinctive falsetto-leaning vocal delivery, virtuosic one-man-band recording approach (use of vintage analog synthesizers and production approaches), and arrangements drawing on classic 1960s and 1970s psychedelic rock alongside contemporary synth-pop influences. Parker's foundational influence on contemporary psychedelic rock is widely documented.
