Hiromu Fukui, performing as Ryo Fukui, was born in Biratori, Hokkaido, Japan on June 1, 1948. He launched his recording career relatively late in life, having begun playing jazz piano around age 22. His 1976 self-released debut Scenery - recorded at the age of 27 with late-1970s post-bop influences (McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, and Bud Powell reference points) - established him as a distinctive contemporary Japanese jazz pianist. Both Scenery (1976) and his 1977 follow-up Mellow Dream remained obscure in Japan and internationally during his lifetime. He continued performing in his Hokkaido jazz club (the Slowboat in Sapporo) across multi-decade subsequent years and recorded additional material in the 1990s and 2000s. He died on March 15, 2016 at age 67. His work rediscovered internationally in the 2010s through Spotify and YouTube algorithm-driven recommendations, particularly for the lo-fi hip hop / late-night listening community.
