Peter Cat Recording Co. (often abbreviated PCRC) formed in New Delhi, India in 2009 around Suryakant Sawhney. The band's name was taken from the cat in Haruki Murakami's writing. They have been active in the contemporary Indian indie rock scene and have expanded internationally through their German Tapete Records partnership. Their 2019 album Bismillah received international critical attention and expanded their international audience. They have continued releasing material across multiple decades.
Sound and style
Peter Cat Recording Co.'s sound combines psychedelic rock, jazz fusion, indie rock, dream pop, world music, art rock, and Indian indie with Sawhney's distinctive vocal delivery, extensive multi-instrumental arrangements (use of horns, piano, and Indian instrumental elements), and arrangements drawing on classic jazz, Indian classical music, gypsy jazz, and contemporary indie rock influences.
