Geethali Norah Jones Shankar was born in New York City on March 30, 1979. She is the daughter of Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar (1920-2012) and American concert producer Sue Jones. She was raised by her mother in Dallas, Texas, with minimal contact with her father until her late teens. She attended the University of North Texas before relocating to New York City in 1999. She signed with Blue Note Records and released her debut Come Away with Me (2002), which became one of the most commercially successful albums in modern jazz pop history - with over 27 million copies sold worldwide and an eight-Grammy sweep at the 2003 ceremony (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year for Don't Know Why, Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and others) - a achievement matched by few artists in Grammy history.
