Ngozi Family was a Zambian Zamrock band formed in Lusaka in 1973 around Paul Ngozi, one of the founding acts of Zambia's fuzzed-out 1970s psychedelic rock movement. Ngozi Family formed in Lusaka, Zambia in 1973 around Paul Ngozi (Paul Nyirongo). They are widely cited as one of the foundational acts of Zamrock - the distinctive Zambian psychedelic rock and proto-punk movement of the 1970s that emerged alongside Zambia's post-colonial cultural development under President Kenneth Kaunda. Paul Ngozi died in a 1985 car accident at age 36 (some sources cite 1989 but 1985 is the more commonly-documented date). The Zamrock movement collapsed in the 1980s due to economic conditions and the AIDS crisis (which devastated the Zambian music community). Their work has been rediscovered through the Now-Again Records reissue series of Zamrock material across the 2010s.
Ngozi Family's sound combines Zamrock, psychedelic rock, garage rock, proto-punk, African rock, and acid rock with Paul Ngozi's distinctive vocal delivery (English-language delivery alongside Bemba-language material), extensive distorted guitar work, and arrangements drawing on classic Western psychedelic rock alongside traditional Zambian musical influences.
