David Kimbrough Jr., performing as Junior Kimbrough, was born in Hudsonville, Mississippi on July 28, 1930. He worked extensively across his lifetime as a juke joint owner and performer in Holly Springs and Marshall County, Mississippi, becoming a foundational figure in the North Mississippi Hill Country blues tradition alongside contemporaries R.L. Burnside and Otha Turner. He recorded sparingly until late in his life, when Fat Possum Records launched their comprehensive Hill Country blues recording program in the early 1990s. He died of a heart attack on January 17, 1998 at age 67. His sons, including David Kimbrough Jr. and Robert Kimbrough Sr., have continued the family musical tradition. The Black Keys's 2006 EP Chulahoma (Songs of Junior Kimbrough) drew attention to his catalog.
Junior Kimbrough's sound combines North Mississippi Hill Country blues, blues, electric blues, and Delta blues with his distinctive hypnotic, drone-based guitar approach (different from Delta blues' chord-based structure), extended modal jam sections, and signature juke joint dance-oriented arrangements.
