Alberto Aguilera Valadez, performing as Juan Gabriel, was born in Parácuaro, Michoacán, Mexico on January 7, 1950 and raised in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. After a difficult childhood including time spent in an orphanage, he relocated to Mexico City and launched his recording career in 1971. He became one of the most commercially successful Latin musicians of all time, with hits across multiple decades and cultural impact across Mexico and the broader Latin American world. His 1990 performance at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City was a landmark moment for popular Mexican music in a classical music venue. He died of a heart attack on August 28, 2016 at age 66.
