Jack White

About Jack White

John Anthony Gillis, performing as Jack White, was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 9, 1975 as the tenth child in his family. He adopted the Jack White name after marrying Meg White in 1996 (they divorced in 2000 but continued performing as the White Stripes until 2011). The White Stripes' raw garage rock minimalism - just Jack on guitar and vocals and Meg on drums - produced six studio albums and made them one of the most important rock acts of the 2000s. He has been involved in other bands including the Raconteurs (with Brendan Benson, since 2005) and the Dead Weather (with Alison Mosshart of the Kills, since 2009). He founded Third Man Records in 2001 (with the Nashville headquarters/store opening in 2009 and the Detroit location in 2015), which has become one of the most important independent record labels of the 21st century. He has produced and collaborated extensively with Loretta Lynn (Van Lear Rose, 2004), Wanda Jackson, and others. He won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2023 for Fear of the Dawn (2022).
