Charles Mingus Jr. was born in Nogales, Arizona on April 22, 1922 and raised in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. He worked as a sideman for Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Parker, and others before establishing himself as a bandleader in the 1950s. He co-founded Debut Records with Max Roach in 1952, releasing his own and others' work outside the major-label system. His subsequent catalog on Atlantic, Columbia, Impulse!, and Candid produced more than 40 albums as a leader. He died in Cuernavaca, Mexico on January 5, 1979 from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). His memoir Beneath the Underdog (1971) and the posthumous big-band work Epitaph (premiered 1989) extended his cultural footprint after his death.
Mingus's compositions span post-bop, hard bop, third stream, free jazz, and progressive jazz, with extensive incorporation of gospel, blues, classical chamber music, and Latin music traditions. His distinctive style integrates complex arranged sections with extended improvisation, often within explicitly political compositions addressing racial injustice and American culture.
