The band's long-running rhythm section featured King Coffey on drums (from 1983) and various bassists over the years. They became central figures in the American post-hardcore and experimental rock underground of the 1980s, signing with Alternative Tentacles, Touch and Go, and Rough Trade before moving to Capitol Records for Independent Worm Saloon (1993). Their major-label single Pepper from Electriclarryland (1996) became an unlikely radio hit.
