Wax Trax is hiring!
Colorado's oldest record store is looking for self-motivated, highly productive staff for 2 positions. Please note, we receive over 100 resumes for every position we advertise, and this makes it impossible to respond to everyone requesting an update on their own application. If this ad is still up, we are likely still going through candidates. If it is not, it means we have made a hire. Please do not email or come in store asking for updates.
PRO TIP: We get a lot of resumes where people tell us about how they love music. Well, loving music as it turns out is almost universal among the world's population, and it does not tell us anything about how you would be as an employee, so please, tell us in your cover letter about how your work and personal experience lends itself to the hard work and extensive knowledge we bring to Wax Trax. We are looking for people who are extremely self-motivated and productive, who love to stay busy, are detail-oriented, organized, with plenty of energy and who are able to do lots of squats to reach under our record racks, and to lift a heavy box of records on a more than daily basis. Contrary to popular opinion, record stores are hard work (but yea, pretty fun too). Women, people of color, and LGBTQ are strongly encouraged to apply.
1. Full Time Entry-Level Sales ++ (includes shipping and restocking)
Wax Trax has a life of its own, and to a very large degree its reputation is tied to the high level of knowledge and the friendliness of its staff. The entry-level sales position at Wax Trax takes a lot of work, and a lot of attention to detail. It requires working weekends and a healthy attitude towards staying busy. It is one of the only jobs at Wax Trax that does not require significant prior record store experience, but it does require strong musical knowledge and an interest in music as a career, and a stable and productive work history is generally required as well.
We are also always looking for entry-level people who have experience and skills in other types of work that the store always needs, such as graphic design, illustration, shipping, writing, marketing, and sound engineering. If you went to school in one of these areas and need to build some clips/projects/portfolio work, Wax Trax is an option! Real contributions to the store's creative output are rewarded. Also let us know if you play music in any capacity, or are in a band.
The primary responsibilities of sales people at Wax Trax are keeping up with “the pull” by restocking the racks, keeping the sales floor and counters clean, and last but not least, ringing out sales. This involves a lot of running around, squats to reach the understock, and occasional heavy lifting. There is also a great deal to learn about our Point Of Sale (POS) system, including how to manage gift cards, returns, and other feats of technical wizardry. Sales people are also asked to help in other areas like shipping, receiving, and our mobile unit.
Skills required
- Organized and motivated to find ways to improve the store’s organization
- Ability to lift heavy boxes of LPs
- Ability to type at least 40 words per minute
- Ability to be moving around on your feet all day, including doing lots of squats!
- Proficient with Excel/Google Sheets
- Experience with and an aptitude for understanding databases
Traits
- Detail oriented
- Strong work ethic
- Self-starter
- Emotionally intelligent
- Talks to strangers
Extra credit for:
- Experience with point of sale systems and/or ecommerce websites
- Any kind of experience in the music industry
- You don’t have to be in a band, play music, or be a DJ to work at Wax Trax, but it does indicate your interest in music so let us know…
Other requirements:
Must be available to work regular 8-hour long shifts during the store's hours daily (having other days free to cover people's shifts is also nice). THIS IS A FULL TIME POSITION that requires working on weekend days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). The location of the work is as of yet undetermined (it could be at any of our current locations or even at one of our mobile events), but as you gain experience and prove your skills/productivity getting some choices of where you want to be becomes possible.
Compensation:
This is an entry level position that generally starts at $19.29/hr or more based on relevant experience. The full range of pay for this position is $19.29 - $21/hr, based on performance. There are also many ways to develop a higher wage at Wax Trax by excelling at shipping/receiving, getting into used or new record buying, marketing (including social media), making and editing videos, graphics, writing, database building, or website UX, SEO, etc. This is typically Wax Trax’s only entry-level position (the only one available to people without previous record store or other professional experience). When other positions become available, Sales people who work hard and can keep track of and manage the details –without having to be asked to do so– will have a chance to advance.
BENEFITS:
Our mantra here at Wax Trax is to work productively so we can all reap the benefits. Entry-level staff start at a low wage, but there are opportunities for people who crank through their work efficiently and enjoy their time doing it. The productivity of our staff means we can afford to provide meaningful benefits right back to our staff. We currently offer:
- A healthcare plan and assistance paying for it (after the first 60 days)
- An annual Christmas Bonus that rewards high performance and the hours worked
- An annual May/Spring bonus that rewards high performance and the hours worked
- 2 weeks paid vacation annually (three weeks after 5 years)
- Occasional free tickets to shows
- Co-workers who are creative, artists, musicians, DJs, and other music lovers
- and more!
