Hermit's Grove LP

Wax Machine recorded Hermit's Grove above a Brighton mortuary, which tracks, because Lau Ro's songs keep one foot in the world and one somewhere stranger. The band, rounded out by drummer-percussionist Toma Sapir and flutist-vocalist Isobel Jones, folds psych-folk into Brazilian Tropicália and kitschy Italian library music, tipping a hat to Os Mutantes and Caetano Veloso across seven tracks, including a cover of Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell's Canto de Iemanjá. Originally out in 2022 on Batov Records, this is a repress, not a rediscovery, and it still sounds like nobody else in Brighton.
