Native Invader asks a mother who can no longer speak to somehow still explain a country falling apart, and Tori Amos treats both problems as the same song. Her fifteenth album, released on Decca in 2017, grew out of her mother's stroke, addressed head-on in 'Mary's Eyes,' and trips to North Carolina's Smoky Mountains chasing her mother's Native American family history. Political division of the era seeps into 'Reindeer King' and 'Broken Arrow,' grief and land rights tangled into the same verses.
