Tim Maia self-released Racional Vol. 1 on his own Seroma label in early 1975, soon after joining the UFO-linked Rational Culture movement and rewriting his songs around its message. It mixes progressive soul, funk, and samba, with a sobriety in his voice often called some of his best singing. He later turned on the movement and tried to destroy copies, which is why originals stayed scarce and heavily bootlegged.
