Adore is the Smashing Pumpkins album that walked in without its drummer and came out sounding like a haunted house wired for synths instead of guitars. Jimmy Chamberlin was gone, so Matt Cameron and Joey Waronker sat in while Nitzer Ebb's Bon Harris ran electronic sequencing on eight tracks. It opened at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum in 1998. Billy Corgan later admitted it documented a band coming apart, and Pitchfork rated it among the group's best work since Siamese Dream.
