Boomer's Story was Ry Cooder's third album, cut at Amigo Studios in Burbank with producers Jim Dickinson and Lenny Waronker. It followed Into the Purple Valley and dug even deeper into pre-war blues and Americana sources, pulling from songs associated with Skip James and Sleepy John Estes alongside numbers by Dan Penn and Chips Moman. It came out on Reprise, the label Cooder stuck with through much of the 1970s while building his name as one of the era's most versatile roots guitarists.
