Raw Like Sushi is Neneh Cherry's debut, built with Bomb the Bass's Tim Simenon and Soul II Soul's Nellee Hooper, and it plays like rap, dance, and pop got shoved into one room and told to share. "Buffalo Stance" and the string-draped "Manchild" both landed as UK hits, mixing sharp, confrontational lyrics with hooks built for the floor. People point back to this record as an early sketch of the trip-hop sound Massive Attack and Portishead later filled out in Bristol.
