Dibango, Manu - Rework Collection #1 LP

Manu Dibango spent six decades turning his work as a Cameroonian saxophonist, pianist, and composer into jazz, funk, and West African fusion that reached ears far outside Africa. His 1972 track "Soul Makossa" got sampled constantly, feeding disco, hip-hop, and even Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." This collection hands that catalog to a crew of producers and DJs to rework, pulling in sibling tracks "Reggae Makossa" and "Sun Explosion," pressed through the French reissue label Diggers Factory. Dibango died in 2020, but these reworkings treat his tunes like they are still being written.
