Robbie Robertson finished this score, his last, while being treated for prostate cancer, dying in August 2023 not long after the work was done. Scoring for director Martin Scorsese, he built the music from guitars, mandolins, cellos, mandocellos, zither, and harmonica, sending sketches to orchestrator Mark Graham back in pre-production so the score could grow alongside the film like weather building over a plain rather than arriving after the fact. It earned a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score, among the best work of his career by critical consensus.
