Welcome to Hell LP

Toronto saxophonist and composer Joseph Shabason built his reputation on heavy subject matter, records that work through his grandparents' Holocaust survival or his mother's Parkinson's diagnosis, so rescoring a 1996 skateboard video called Welcome to Hell is the joke here. He strips the original tape's punk and metal soundtrack and replaces it with hazy, jazz-inflected ambient music that owes more to Jon Hassell, Azymuth, and Miles Davis's In a Silent Way than to skate culture, with guitarist Thom Gill supplying lyrics for the title track. The mismatch is the point.
