Girlfriends / Girlfriends (Reverse) 2LP

Girlfriends is really just Jerry Joiner, a Portland guy who made one full-length under that name back in 2009 and left it at that. The drumming is arrhythmic and fidgety, like someone tapping out three different rhythms at once, while the guitars stay minimal and catchy underneath emo-toned vocals, somewhere between glitchy math rock and the more plaintive end of emo. This edition doubles the record with a full set of 'reverse' versions, alternately titled songs run backward through the whole thing like a funhouse mirror.
