Swamp Dogg produced this one and it shows: cut live with Reed's band over ten days at Brooklyn's Restoration Sound. Reed made his reputation reviving classic soul and R&B, but Getting There is grown folks music, songs about staying in love rather than falling into it, working through long-term commitment, family, and the daily grind of partnership. Soul, gospel, country, and R&B blend together, with Zaniah and Swamp Dogg himself turning up on guest vocals. Solid, mature material, worth the shelf space.
