Berry is on Top LP

Berry Is on Top is basically Chess playing it straight: a round-up of Chuck Berry's biggest early singles, among them "Maybellene," with only one new cut taped specifically for the LP. Johnnie Johnson and Lafayette Leake trade off on piano, Willie Dixon holds down bass, and the Moonglows sneak backing vocals onto several tracks. AllMusic's Cub Koda pegged it as close to a mini greatest-hits package in its own right, a backhanded compliment for a label built on strip-mining its own singles catalog.
