Albert King cut I Wanna Get Funky in 1972 and let it sit two years before Stax put it out in 1974, by which point it had curdled into something louder and dirtier than his earlier sides. The Bar-Kays and the Movement build the backbone, the Memphis Horns stack on top, Lester Snell writes the strings, and Donald Kinsey, who'd later play guitar behind Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, rides rhythm guitar the whole way through. Deep funk diggers still chase this one for those horns.
