About Wolves in the Throne Room
Wolves in the Throne Room formed in Olympia, Washington in 2003, founded by brothers Aaron Weaver (drums) and Nathan Weaver (guitar, vocals). Rooted in the Pacific Northwest, the band became a defining act of American atmospheric black metal, often associated with the Cascadian black metal scene. Their deep connection to nature and rural living informs both their music and their philosophy.
Sound and style
The band plays atmospheric and Cascadian black metal, combining the tremolo-picked guitars, blast beats, and harsh vocals of traditional black metal with extended, immersive song structures, ambient passages, post-rock textures, and themes of nature, ecology, and transcendence. Their expansive, environmentally conscious approach helped define a distinctly American strain of the genre.
