$uicideboy$

$uicideboy$ is the American hip hop duo of New Orleans cousins Ruby da Cherry and $crim, formed in 2014 on a dark, abrasive sound rooted in Memphis rap and punk. They broke out of SoundCloud, and the 2018 debut I Want to Die in New Orleans — a US top-ten album — is still the place to start. Shop $uicideboy$ vinyl and CDs at Wax Trax Records.

About $uicideboy$

$uicideboy$ (sometimes stylized as $UICIDEBOY$) is an American hip hop duo from New Orleans, Louisiana, formed in 2014 by cousins Aristos Petrou (Ruby da Cherry) and Scott Arceneaux Jr. ($crim). The duo rose to popularity through SoundCloud, building an underground audience on the strength of self-produced beats and stark lyrical content focused on substance use and depression. They own and operate the G*59 Records label, under which all of their music is released.

Sound and style

The $uicideboy$ sound draws heavily from early Three 6 Mafia and Memphis rap, layered with elements of punk and 2010s emo-rap. Production is typically abrasive, with distorted low-end, sampled vocals, and aggressive percussion. Lyrical themes range from melancholy and suicidal ideation to violence and substance use, with many songs referencing New Orleans neighborhoods and streets where the duo grew up. The Three 6 Mafia influence has been openly acknowledged by founding Three 6 member Juicy J, who has collaborated with the duo on his own mixtapes.
