About Solange

Solange Piaget Knowles was born in Houston, Texas on June 24, 1986 to Mathew Knowles and Tina Knowles, the younger sister of Beyoncé. She launched her recording career as a teenager with the 2003 debut Solo Star on Music World Music (her father's label). Her 2008 follow-up Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams pivoted toward more 1960s-influenced soul and R&B. She founded Saint Records in 2013 with creative independence and controlled aesthetic vision. Her 2016 album A Seat at the Table - featuring the singles Cranes in the Sky and Don't Touch My Hair - became her commercial and critical breakthrough, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and winning the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance in 2017 for Cranes in the Sky. Her 2019 follow-up When I Get Home - released as a Apple TV+ visual album - continued her trajectory with Houston-inspired creative direction. She has parallel work as a performance artist and choreographer (2019 Witness! at Houston's Sky's the Limit, 2024 Bridge-s programs). Her foundational influence on contemporary R&B and art pop is widely cited.

Sound and style

Solange's sound combines R&B, soul, neo-soul, art pop, alternative R&B, contemporary R&B, electronic, jazz, and experimental pop with her distinctive vocal delivery (use of intimate phrasing and atmospheric textures), collaborative production approaches (work with Raphael Saadiq, Sampha, John Carroll Kirby, Pharrell Williams), and lyrical content addressing Black identity, womanhood, family, and broader contemporary themes drawing on African American literary and political traditions.
