They are widely cited as one of the foundational acts of cowpunk (the blend of country, rockabilly, and hardcore punk that emerged from the Southern California punk scene in the early 1980s) and the contemporary American punk rock scene. Their early 1980s catalog established their distinctive punk rock sound, with blend of hardcore punk and country/rockabilly influences across the band's multi-decade catalog. Their 1990 self-titled album - produced by Dave Jerden - established their commercial breakthrough. Mike Ness has been open about drug addiction recovery (heroin addiction in the 1980s, recovery beginning 1985+). Dennis Danell died of a brain aneurysm on February 29, 2000 at age 38; Jonny Wickersham (ex-U.S. Bombs) replaced him. The band has continued releasing material across multiple decades.
