Slowdive formed in Reading, Berkshire, England in 1989 around Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell (school friends who had played together since their teenage years). Christian Savill, Nick Chaplin, and Adrian Sell completed the early lineup, with Sell quickly replaced by Simon Scott (later of Seefeel). They signed with Creation Records in 1990. They are widely cited as one of the foundational acts of shoegaze alongside My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Lush, and Chapterhouse - the late-1980s to early-1990s British shoegaze movement centered around Creation Records and Reading. Their 1993 album Souvlaki - featuring Brian Eno production contributions and the singles When the Sun Hits and Alison - is widely cited as one of the most important shoegaze albums in popular music history. Their 1995 album Pygmalion pivoted toward more ambient, electronic, and minimalist approaches; Creation Records dropped them shortly after release. The band dissolved in 1995.
