Slow Pulp formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 2017 around Emily Massey, Henry Stoehr, Alex Leeds, and Teddy Mathews - friends from their teenage years. They relocated to Chicago, Illinois in the late 2010s. They have been associated with the contemporary indie rock and slacker rock revival scenes. Their 2020 debut Moveys received critical attention amid the pandemic, with Massey vocal cord issues during the recording. Their 2023 follow-up Yard on ANTI- Records continued their trajectory.
Slow Pulp's sound combines indie rock, slacker rock, indie pop, dream pop, alternative rock, and shoegaze with Massey's distinctive intimate vocal delivery, atmospheric dual guitar arrangements, and lyrical content addressing relationships, mental health, and personal experience drawing on confessional songwriting traditions alongside contemporary indie rock influences.
